Among the horse subjects here, this picture stands out for its focus on a man working with two animals, with the human figure at its center. Doris Ulmann, a New York photographer, made many portraits of rural Southern and Appalachian people around 1930, often in platinum prints prized for their soft tonal range. The caption card's title uses a phrase common in that period but now considered offensive, and the record notes its details are unverified, so the exact location and sitter remain uncertain. The Library of Congress received the print as a gift from the Doris Ulmann Foundation in 1935.
