Two horses stand inside a fenced pasture in the foreground of this August 1945 view of Happy Farm near Fargo, North Dakota, with the farmhouse and outbuildings rising behind them. A photographer working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture made the picture, and the department's staff recorded rural life across the country during the 1940s. Horses were still common on Northern Plains farms then, even as tractors spread, and wartime labor shortages left many farms short of hands by the summer of 1945. The details here come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
