Of the many horse pictures in this group, this one is set at the Imperial Stud Farm at Kağıthane, a valley north of Istanbul, and its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French. It comes from an album of palaces, mosques, and monuments assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909 and used photography to document his realm. The print may be the work of Abdullah Frères, a studio of Ottoman-Armenian photographers active in Istanbul, which produced many views for the palace. Imperial stables were important to court ceremony and display, so the picture offers a glimpse of how the sultan's horses were kept and presented.
