The stud farm at Kağıthane, a valley on the Golden Horn north of Istanbul, is the subject here, and the caption names it in both Ottoman Turkish and French. The print was likely made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio of Armenian brothers who photographed the Ottoman court and its sites in the late nineteenth century. It comes from an album in the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, which records palaces, mosques, and other structures across the empire, and it is dated between 1880 and 1893. The album's purpose was to present the sultan's domains, so the horses are shown as part of imperial display as much as animal study.
