Captioned in both Ottoman Turkish and French, this print shows the imperial stud farm at Kağıthane, a valley on the outskirts of Istanbul where the Ottoman sultans kept horses and pleasure grounds. It comes from an album of palaces, mosques, and monuments assembled during the reign of Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. The photographer may have been Abdullah Frères, an Istanbul studio that worked for the court. The horses, shown as a record of the imperial herd, are the main thing to look at.
