Small native horses, far smaller than the cavalry mounts of the American army, are the focus of this view of a Cavite street in the Philippines around 1899. The Philippine pony was a compact, hardy animal used for hauling and riding, and its size stands out beside the American soldiers included in the scene. Cavite, on Manila Bay, had been a Spanish naval center before the 1898 war, and by 1899 American troops were stationed there during the early years of the Philippine-American War. The photograph offers a glimpse of everyday transport in a place where military control had just changed hands.
