A team of horses strains to pull wagonloads of sections cut from the trunk of the General Noble, a giant sequoia that loggers in Tulare County felled in the early 1890s. Though the record calls it a redwood, the tree was a sequoia, and its enormous cross-sections were prized as curiosities. Shipping them to Chicago was a way to promote the lumber industry and California's giant trees to a national audience. The photograph, by C.C. Curtis of Esperanza, shows how much brute animal labor it took to move such massive pieces overland before rail transport.
