The scene is set at the meet, the gathering point where riders, horses and hounds assemble before the chase, with the cover, the thicket or woodland where a fox might be found, as the goal. The design is by Henry Alken, the English sporting artist who recorded the hunting field in the early nineteenth century. Eugene Tily engraved this version, and the Bristol firm of Frost & Reed published it around 1931, which suggests a later edition of Alken's design. Alken drew horses and hounds with close attention to their build and to the ceremony of the hunt.
