This picture shows a horse-drawn ambulance that the caption identifies as a Gallop ambulance of the U.S. Army. Ambulances like this were pulled by teams of horses and carried wounded or sick soldiers over rough ground, and they were a common sight on Army posts and at military exercises before motor vehicles took over that work in the 1910s. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in New York. The title comes from caption data the agency recorded, which has not been independently verified, and the record gives no firm date.
