A pack horse carries a chest of instruments for a Signal Corps wireless telegraph outfit, and the load shows how much radio gear depended on animal transport. The record date of March 24, 1916, falls during the U.S. Army's pursuit of Pancho Villa's forces in northern Mexico, when portable wireless and field telegraph helped keep scattered columns in contact across country where wire lines were scarce. The title comes from Bain News Service caption information that has not been independently verified, so the exact unit and location remain uncertain. The Bain agency produced many news pictures of this kind, and the negatives are now part of the Library of Congress collection.
