Rated at three horsepower, the engine in this 1896 book illustration reflects how engineers still measured new machines by the horses they could replace. The drawing appeared in Dugald Clerk's *The Gas and Oil Engine*, published in New York that year, and it shows a type of engine associated with Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir, the Belgian-born engineer who built early working engines fueled by coal gas around 1860. Those engines were an early step toward the internal combustion engine, and Clerk's book helped explain how such machines worked to engineers of the following generation.
