Few engines of the Second World War carried a reputation like the Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp, and this picture pairs a mechanic with one of its 2,400-horsepower radials. The engine got its name from two staggered rows of nine cylinders, a layout that packed a great deal of power into a compact frame. Pratt & Whitney built the R-2800 in large numbers, and it powered fighters such as the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt and the Vought F4U Corsair. Its durability in demanding service made it one of the most widely produced American aircraft engines of the war.
