A Case thresher hitched to a 75 horsepower steam engine makes this scene distinct: the engine supplied the power, and the separator beside it did the work of splitting grain from straw. Steam threshing rigs like this were a common sight on large American grain farms from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, and they usually needed a crew of workers and neighbors to feed sheaves into the machine and haul away the grain and straw. J.I. Case Company, based in Racine, Wisconsin, was one of the best-known makers of these engines and threshers. The record does not give a date, so the exact year is unknown.
