Here the subject is an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela, the city where he was born in 1783. The card's caption calls him "the Washington of South America," a comparison that reflects how he was regarded after leading campaigns that freed much of northern South America from Spanish rule. Published by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-producing stereo views, the card was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the statue a sense of depth when viewed at home. The photograph dates to about 1913.
