Dorothy Gordon was 13 when she made this linocut of horses, and the photograph preserves her print as a record of children's art from the Harlem Art Workshop. The workshop, a neighborhood program in New York City in the early 1930s, gave young Black artists a place to make and show work when established institutions offered them few chances. The Harmon Foundation, which promoted African American artists through exhibitions and archival records, kept the image in its files, and James Latimer Allen made the photograph in 1933.
