Few images from Gettysburg are as blunt about the cost of the battle as this one. It shows the horses of Bigelow's 9th Massachusetts Battery, lying where they fell after the artillery unit fought in the fields around the Peach Orchard on July 2, 1863. Artillery teams were essential to moving and firing guns, so a battery's horses were as vulnerable as its men, and their carcasses often littered the ground around the guns. The photograph was taken in 1863 but printed later, and it belongs to a series of battlefield views that helped Americans see the aftermath of the fighting.
