Remington made this pastel drawing of a mounted figure, reproduced here as a print for the 1901 book *A Bunch of Buckskins*. Remington (1861-1909) became one of the best-known illustrators of the American West, and his illustrations for magazines and books helped shape popular images of cavalry, cowboys, and Plains life. The title and subject terms come from an old caption card, so the identification of the rider as a Sioux chief is unverified. The horse is as central to the composition as the rider, which fits the Horses heading under which the picture is filed.
