Mounted and facing the camera, General Henry Ware Lawton sits at the center of this 1899 photograph taken in the Philippines. Lawton had earned a reputation as a capable commander in the Spanish-American War before leading U.S. Army troops against Filipino forces that year. He was killed in action near San Mateo, outside Manila, in December 1899. The caption card credits Dean C. Worcester and P.L. Sherman, but that attribution is unverified.
