Mary Parker Corning, daughter of New York Congressman Parker Corning, poses with her two entries, the horses named "Joy" and "Red," at the annual Washington horse show held at a riding and hunt club. Horse shows like this were fixtures of the capital's social calendar in the early twentieth century, when well-to-do women often competed in the show ring as well as attended as spectators. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington society and public life between about 1909 and 1932, made the picture. It shows how equestrian competition gave women a visible public role in that era.
