Warren G. Harding, the 29th president, is pictured here in the act of entering a riding horse in a show, a moment that puts the presidency alongside a pastime he enjoyed in private life. Harding kept horses and was a familiar figure on Washington's riding paths during his time in office, which ran from 1921 until his death in 1923. The photograph was taken in the early 1920s, when the White House and its surrounding social world often drew press attention to the president's personal habits. Horse shows of the period were popular community events, and this image captures a lighter side of an administration better remembered for other things.
