A horse balks at a fence, and the moment of hesitation is the subject of this color woodcut, titled *Refusing the Jump*. The poster advertised the St. Louis Horse Show at the Coliseum in 1901, when horse shows drew large city crowds as both sporting and social events. Morris, a sporting artist, produced many horse show posters for American shows of this period, and bold color prints like this one were a common way to publicize them. The record comes from an older caption card and has not been fully verified, so the date and attribution are best read with that caveat in mind.
