Here the sitter is Chief American Horse, a Teton Dakota leader whose record gives his dates as 1840 to 1908, so this is a portrait of a man, though the picture hangs among the horse prints. By 1900 many Plains leaders had lived on reservations for decades, and studio portraits of them circulated widely among the public and in print. This one was registered for copyright by J.A. Anderson, whose name and deposit number, 934, are printed in the record, which is why the Library of Congress holds it today.
