Despite the title, this print shows a person, not a horse: American Horse was the name of a Lakota leader, and the caption card files the picture under "Indians." The record is a photoprint copyrighted by J.A. Anderson and numbered 933, and its date of about 1900 and other details come from the caption card and have not been verified. Photographic portraits of Plains leaders from this period were often produced as studio images for a public that was curious about Native peoples after the reservation era began, and they now serve researchers as evidence of how sitters were posed and presented.
