Adderley Street, Cape Town's main commercial thoroughfare, is the setting here as a body of South African Light Horse rides down it to board trains bound for the front. The Light Horse was a volunteer mounted regiment raised during the Second Anglo-Boer War, which began in October 1899, and the card was issued by the New York firm Underwood & Underwood around 1900. Like all stereographs, it holds two nearly identical photographs side by side, so a viewer using a stereoscope sees the horses and street with a depth a single print cannot give.
