Adderley Street, one of Cape Town's main thoroughfares, is the setting here as a column of South African Light Horse troopers rides toward the railway to board trains for the front. The record dates the scene to February 26, 1900, during the South African War, when the Cape ports and rail lines were central to moving British forces north. Underwood & Underwood issued the view as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, a popular parlor entertainment that brought distant conflicts into middle-class homes.
