The title, *The Horse-Man of the Period*, points to a satirical type rather than a specific rider. "Man of the period" was a common phrase in the 1870s for the fashionable figure whose clothes and manners often outran his skill. Currier & Ives issued comic and sporting lithographs like this in large numbers for a mass audience, and the firm's colorists hand-tinted many of them in batches, so surviving copies vary in color and care. The print is listed as number 3185 in the 1983 *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*, a standard reference for dating and identifying the firm's work.
