Sallie Gardner, a bay mare owned by Leland Stanford, is the horse at the center of this photograph. In 1878 Stanford hired Eadweard Muybridge to settle a long-running argument among horsemen about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge lined a track at Stanford's Palo Alto farm with cameras, each triggered by a tripwire as the horse passed, and the resulting sequence showed that it does. The series became a landmark in the study of motion and a forerunner of motion pictures.
