Sallie Gardner, a bay mare owned by Leland Stanford, is the horse at the center of this diagram, which traces where each hoof touches down during a gallop. It grew out of Eadweard Muybridge's 1878 photographic experiments at Stanford's Palo Alto farm, where a row of cameras recorded the mare in rapid succession as she ran past. Stanford wanted to settle a long-running debate over whether a galloping horse ever had all four feet off the ground at once, and the sequence showed that it did. Muybridge's motion studies later helped lead to the development of motion pictures, so the diagram is worth a close look as an early link between scientific measurement and animation.
