A smith in a leather apron works a glowing bar on the anvil, shaping a horseshoe by hand with a hammer, the kind of daily task that once kept nearly every town and rural crossroads supplied with iron work. Photographed around 1909, when horses still pulled most farm wagons, delivery carts and streetcars in American cities, the scene captures a trade that depended on the animals it served. Farriers and blacksmiths were essential to keeping horses sound and working, and shops like this one were often the busiest and most sociable corners of a community. The image is a useful record of hand-forging just before motor vehicles began to replace the horse.
