Horseshoe Falls, the broad, curved drop on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, gives this view its name, and its crescent-shaped crest sets it apart from the straighter American Falls. The print is an albumen photograph, a process that dominated commercial photography from the 1850s into the 1890s. The record credits George Barker, a Buffalo photographer who recorded Niagara extensively. Its caption card notes the tourist trade, a reminder that views like this were sold to visitors as souvenirs of their trip to the falls.
