Horseshoe Falls, the crescent-shaped cataract on the Canadian side of the Niagara River, is the subject here, and the "no. 1" in the title suggests it belonged to a numbered series of Niagara views. George Barker, a Buffalo photographer, built a substantial business selling such scenes of the falls and gorge to visitors in the 1880s. The record dates the print to about 1885, but those details come from the caption card and have not been independently verified. The sweep of water at the center of the composition shows how the falls were presented to tourists of that era.
