Horseshoe Falls, the broad crescent of water on the Ontario side of the Niagara River, is the subject here, and the "II" in the title suggests the company issued more than one view of it. The Detroit Publishing Co., then known as the Detroit Photographic Company, sold color views like this to the tourists who arrived by rail and steamer to see the falls around 1898. Its color prints were often made by the photochrom process, which gave the cataract's green water and white spray a painted richness that appealed to buyers far from Niagara.
