Horseshoe Falls, the great curved cataract on the Canadian side of the Niagara River, is the subject of this numbered view, one of several the photographer made of it. George Barker, a Buffalo photographer who built a large business on Niagara scenery, copyrighted the image, a step that protected his views from unauthorized copying. The print is an albumen print, the standard process for photographs of this period, which gives it the warm brown tone and fine detail typical of the 1880s. The date of about 1885 is an estimate drawn from the caption card, so it should be read as approximate.
