Horseshoe Falls takes its name from the broad, curved crest of the cataract on the Canadian side of the Niagara River, a shape rather than any animal, which is worth remembering on a board about horses. George Barker, a Buffalo photographer, made this c1885 view during the years when Niagara had become one of the country's most popular destinations for rail travelers. The falls straddle the New York and Ontario border, and images like this one record the gorge before hydroelectric diversion and heavier development changed the river's flow and shoreline.
