Set just outside the East Gate in Korea, this view shows a blacksmith's shop where a horse is being shod, a working scene that sets it apart from the broader street and landscape views on this board. The card is a stereograph, two nearly identical photographs mounted side by side so that a viewer using a stereoscope would see the scene in depth. Dating to about 1904, it reflects the wave of Korean views made for Western audiences in those years, when Seoul's gates and roads still carried much of the city's traffic by animal and cart.
