Horseshoe Falls, the broad, curved drop of Niagara on the Canadian side, is the subject of this photoprint, which is numbered third in its series. Buffalo photographer George Barker, who issued many views of the cataract in the 1880s, made and copyrighted it, and the caption card dates the scene to about 1885. Photographs like this were sold to tourists who came by rail to see the falls, which had become one of the most photographed natural sites in the United States. Notice the sweep of the crest and the mist rising at its base, which convey the scale that drew visitors there.
