The Horseshoe Fall, the broad curved cataract on the Niagara River that lies mostly on the Canadian side, is the subject here, shown as it appeared around 1849. Its name comes from the shape of its crest, which bends in a wide arc across the gorge and carries most of the river's flow. The shelf-list card associated with this print names Goupil, the Paris firm known for reproductive prints, though that attribution is unverified and the date is approximate. Views like this were widely sold to travelers and to viewers who could never make the journey to see the falls themselves.
