Gibson's horse battery, identified in the record as Battery C of the 3rd U.S. Artillery, was photographed near Fair Oaks, Virginia, in June 1862, shortly after the fighting there on May 31 and June 1 during the Peninsula Campaign. Horse artillery was built for speed, with guns and caissons pulled by teams of horses so the batteries could move quickly to support infantry. This view shows the men and teams in the open ground of the campaign, a rare look at the mobility that gave these units their name.
