Saratoga's racecourse in upstate New York, set in a spa town at the edge of the Adirondack foothills, opened in 1863 and is one of the oldest sporting venues in the United States. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news and everyday pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title is unverified, so the view is best read as a glimpse of the track during the Bain years rather than a documented moment. Glass plates like this one captured fine detail, which is why racing views from that period still reward close looking.
