Epsom Downs, in Surrey, is the grassy racecourse best known as the home of the Derby, first run there in 1780 and still one of England's most famous flat races. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record notes that the title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact date and occasion are uncertain. Still, the picture is a useful glimpse of how a British racing venue was documented for an American audience of that era.
