Pictured on a stereo card dated 1888 and simply titled *The horse race*, this view was made to be seen through a stereoscope, where two nearly identical photographs merge into one image with depth. George Barker, who registered the copyright, produced stereo views that were sold widely for home parlors in the late nineteenth century. The card's subject reflects how popular racing had become by the 1880s, when tracks drew large crowds and horses remained central to both sport and everyday life.
