A racing ostrich, rather than a horse, is the unusual subject here, shown at the race track in Mineola, on Long Island in New York. Novelty races like this were occasionally staged as sideshows alongside ordinary horse racing in the early twentieth century, when crowds at tracks expected entertainment beyond the main card. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, which sold news photographs to newspapers of the period. The title and place come from the Bain caption cards, which the Library of Congress notes were not independently verified.
