Shoeing was a routine but essential part of race-day preparation, and this glass negative shows a blacksmith at work on a horse at Readville, the track near Boston, before its derby. Dated August 25, 1908, it comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers across the country. The title is taken from caption data the agency recorded, which has not been independently verified, so the specific race and horse remain uncertain. In 1908 horses still powered much of transport and sport, and skilled farriers were essential to both.
