Lucretia Rudolph Garfield appears on a chromolithographed mount titled "Horseshoe," a decorative card typical of the commercial portrait cards sold in the early 1880s. The portrait dates to about 1881, the year her husband, James A. Garfield, took office as the twentieth president in March. Her time as First Lady was cut short when he was shot in July and died in September. The card carries a U.S. Copyright Office registration number, a reminder that publishers registered such images to protect them as they spread likenesses of public figures to a wide audience.
