The Horseshoe Curve outside Altoona is one of the most recognizable bends in the Pennsylvania rail system, and this panoramic print shows its sweep across an unusually wide frame. The Pennsylvania Railroad built the curve in the 1850s so trains could climb the Allegheny Front on a gentler grade, and Altoona grew up around the company's shops and yards. Photographer A. P. McDowell's 1934 print was registered for copyright that November. Its long, narrow format, 8 by 46 inches, suits a landscape where the track itself leads the eye across the frame.
