The view looks down on the Horseshoe Fall, the great curved cataract on the Canadian side of Niagara, from Biddle's Stair Case, a wooden stairway that gave visitors access to the rocks and spray below. The card is a stereograph, one of a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be seen together in a stereoscope, which made the falls seem to rise up in three dimensions. Edward Anthony, a New York photographer and publisher, issued many such cards of American and Canadian scenery, and Niagara was among the most photographed sites of the period. Around 1860, tourists flocked to the falls, and cards like this one carried the sight to parlors far from the gorge.
