This 1895 poster promotes *Pony Tracks*, a book of sketches and stories by Frederic Remington, and it puts a mounted cowboy at the center of the design. Edward Penfield, one of the leading American poster artists of the 1890s, created the advertisement, which reflects the vogue for bold, simplified color posters in magazines and bookstores at the time. Remington was known for his scenes of horses and riders on the frontier, and the poster shows how publishers traded on that popularity to sell books about the American West.
