A young couple riding in a breaking cart, a light two-wheeled vehicle used to accustom young horses to harness and carriage work, gives this color poster its subject. Edward Penfield, a leading American illustrator and poster designer of the early 1900s, drew it with the flat areas of color and bold outlines that made his work widely admired and imitated. Dated to about 1902, the picture reflects an era when horse-drawn carriages still dominated city streets and country roads, even as the automobile was beginning to appear. The copyright line credits Heller & Bachrach, a firm known for photography, which is worth noting when considering the poster's commercial origins.
