The Meigs children pose with a dog in a small donkey cart, and a note kept in the case says the animal was bought from two French trappers and missionaries to the Indians who had come down from the northwestern forests. They were the children of Lieutenant Montgomery C. Meigs of the Army Corps of Engineers, and the scene was taken in Detroit, Michigan, between 1850 and 1851. Meigs later became Quartermaster General of the Union Army during the Civil War. The sixth-plate daguerreotype is unsigned, and its maker has not been identified.
