Riding out with John Coolidge, the only son of President Calvin Coolidge, is the other rider, probably Secret Service agent Jim Haley, who was assigned to the family during the Coolidge years in Washington. Horseback riding was a common pastime for the family, and the Coolidges were known for keeping an informal, country-style routine even while living in the White House. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials, families and public events in the 1920s and 1930s. It offers a glimpse of a private moment in the life of a president's household.
